The beauty of the pine tree is that it is a renewable resource from which we derive many valuable products. Sterols come from pine forests that are harvested and replanted with more pine trees as part of a continuous cycle. Paper mills process harvested pine trees in order to make paper and during that process, the beneficial compounds Arboris refines become concentrated as the compounds are separated from the cellulose that is needed for making paper.
These same beneficial compounds are further concentrated when rosins and fatty acids from the trees are distilled for making adhesives, inks and other products. Arboris recovers the remaining concentrates and harvests the sterols using an environmentally-responsible process.
Sterols have been proven to have cholesterol-reducing properties and in recent years have been used more commonly in foods such as spreads, juices, bread, milk, yogurt, and other products. Arboris is the world’s leading producer of natural—not genetically modified—sterols which are used primarily in heart-healthy food products.
